Most people that know me, know that I have worn hair extensions for years. I remember back when I was in college I bought Pricilla Presley’s “The Hair You’ve Always Wanted” from an infomercial. I actually glued that hair right onto my head. True story. I had to take it out every night and hide it because I was too embarrassed for anyone to see the tracks of hair laying around the dorm room.
I have always had very fine hair and even though I sometimes like to wear it shorter, I still wear extensions for the fullness it gives me. The next hair extension craze was when my sister and I bought those clip on ponytails and wore them everywhere together. Looking back, I’m pretty sure that we were actually adults with small children and were running around with clip on ponytails. Don’t judge.
Fast forward through a Monica from Friends layered bob and a horrible blond phase, followed by a Halle berry short pixie phase (omg yes I did). I began wearing the clip in wefts made of human hair while I was growing out the worst hair style of my life. I think I wore these for about two or three years until I started to notice a few little bald spots from the clips (yes my worst nightmare). You know those dreams you have where all your hair or your teeth fall out? It was upsetting to say the least.
Luckily, I discovered Hair Dreams and found the most amazing hair dresser to help me get my own hair to grow back. The Hair Dreams hair extensions are made from the highest quality human hair that has never been cut or colored. My hairdresser gave me a leave in spray for my roots to help get those bald spots growing again. For the most part, the hair grew back but I can still see little spots where it has yet to regrow. Sigh.
Once I had my dream hair again and all its fullness, it didn’t take very long for me to discover what a huge undertaking it was to wash and blow dry all of it. I started going to the Dry Bar for weekly blowouts. Melinda that does my extensions works out of a salon near Fort Worth and it was too far to drive once or twice a week.
I get a whole new head of hair every 4 months and it is well worth the 8 hour day it requires when taking out the old ones and applying the new ones.
I started going to another friend that works out of a salon very close to my house about twice a week for wash and blow dry as well as once a month to cover my sparkling gray hairs that pop out more and more it seems. It is a luxury that I do not take for granted. Self care at its finest.
These two women are largely responsible for helping me feel my best all year long and they have become two of my dearest friends. They know my entire life story and every story about every member of my family.
I am embarrassed to say though that I very rarely do my own hair so I’ll just share with you the products that they recommended for me to use between appointments.
Here are some their favorites!
To keep my hair fresh between yoga workouts, dog walks, and hair appointments I couldn’t live without dry shampoo and ponytail holders. Next I need to learn how to do all those fancy braids!
